About Theia Training
We focus on helping professionals develop the skills necessary to enhance the wellbeing of the communities they work with.
Having worked as counsellors in international schools for many years, we are aware how difficult it can be to access good professional development while abroad. As such, we are passionate about making this training relevant and accessible to people around the world. We create and deliver many of our training modules online, making our professional development available to everyone.
We are also deeply committed to our own professional development, ensuring that the training we offer remains relevant and current.
Who We Are
Kathy Swords and Melissa Cochrane met during an overseas international school posting in 2005. In 2015 we joined forces to create Theia Training.
Our mandate in creating Theia was to provide accredited training that is accessible worldwide. We primarily work with professionals specialising in education, mental health, and wellbeing. We have particular expertise in the international school and expatriate community, as well as boarding schools.

I have nearly 20 years of experience in US, UK, and International Education and Counselling/Psychotherapy. After qualifying as a Teacher, I began my international career on the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, then completed a Masters in Social Work with a Mental Health concentration at San Diego State University.
I have been a School Counsellor in the UK, Romania, and Qatar in American, British, and International Baccalaureate schools. In 2014 I founded Overseas Counseling and Psychotherapy Service, an online Counseling and Psychotherapy service for expatriates all over the world. I am committed to ongoing professional development and have completed training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), trained in the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy with Ellyn Bader of the Couples Institute in California, and am a qualified Executive and Wellness Coach, having trained with Dr Sunny Massad, author of Untherapy and director of the Women’s Leadership Institute for Conscious Coaching . My skills as a coach allow me to work with professionals and well-adjusted people who feel “stuck” in some way, using a system of coaching that serves as a holistic alternative to therapy. I am also currently studying Neuroscience in Clinical Practice.
I am a professional member of the American Counseling Association and am accredited by both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the National Counselling Society in the UK.
